The Hero Splendor+ has a short, regular maintenance schedule and a small oil capacity. This is what Hero MotoCorp’s own owner’s manual specifies: when each service is due, what gets done, which oil to use, and what the warranty requires.

The short answer

  • Five free services: the first at 500–750 km or 60 days, then four more roughly every 3,000 km or 100 days.
  • Then a paid service every 3,000 km or 90 days, whichever comes first.
  • Engine oil is changed at the first service and then every 6,000 km, and topped up at the 3,000 km services in between.
  • Oil grade: SAE 10W-30, API SL, JASO MA2. About 0.85 litre at an oil change.
  • Drive chain: inspected, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted every 2,000 km.

The service schedule

From the Splendor+ programmed FI owner’s manual (pages 27–29). Each free service is due at the kilometre reading or the day limit, counted from the date of purchase, whichever comes first. Hero’s service and maintenance page gives the same figures:

  • 1st free service: 500–750 km, or 60 days from purchase.
  • 2nd free service: 3,000–3,500 km, or 160 days.
  • 3rd free service: 6,000–6,500 km, or 260 days.
  • 4th free service: 9,000–9,500 km, or 360 days.
  • 5th free service: 12,000–12,500 km, or 460 days.
  • Paid services after that: within 90 days or 3,000 km of the previous service, whichever is earlier.

Hero also notes that a bike used hard or ridden in dusty areas needs servicing more often.

What gets done at the services

The maintenance chart (pages 27–29) lists around 30 items. The ones worth knowing:

  • Engine oil: changed at the 1st, 3rd and 5th free services, then every 6,000 km. At the services in between, the level is checked and topped up.
  • Oil strainer screen and centrifugal filter: cleaned at each oil change.
  • Spark plug: inspected, cleaned and gapped at each service, and replaced at 12,000 km and every 12,000 km after that. The gap is 0.6–0.7 mm (page 30).
  • Air filter: replaced every 15,000 km, sooner in dusty conditions. Hero’s chart says not to open the air cleaner element before then unless there is a drivability problem.
  • Valve clearance: checked and adjusted at every service. The standard clearance is 0.10 mm for both intake and exhaust (page 36).
  • Drive chain: inspected, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted every 2,000 km, which is more often than the service interval. Slack should be about 25 mm (page 38).
  • Brakes: shoes inspected and adjusted at every service; the brake cam and pedal cleaned and lubricated at the 2nd and 4th free services, then every 6,000 km.
  • Clutch: lever free play checked and adjusted at every service. It should be 10–20 mm at the lever (page 36).
  • Front fork oil: replaced every 2 years or 30,000 km, whichever is earlier.
  • Emissions: CO at idle is checked every 6,000 km.

Engine oil

Hero specifies its own Hero 4T Plus oil in SAE 10W-30, API SL grade, JASO MA2 (page 31). The engine holds 1 litre when rebuilt and takes about 0.85 litre at a normal drain and refill (page 5).

The manual also asks the rider to check the oil level every day before riding, and to top it up if it has reached the lower mark (page 31). With less than a litre in the engine, there is not much margin if the level drops.

Using a different grade has warranty consequences. The warranty does not apply if an oil other than SAE 10W-30 SL, JASO MA2 is used (page 60). For how this compares with other bikes, see which engine oil does your bike need?

Tyre pressures

Checked cold (page 47):

  • Front: 25 psi (1.75 kgf/cm²), rider only or with a pillion.
  • Rear: 28 psi (2.00 kgf/cm²) rider only, and 41 psi (2.80 kgf/cm²) with a pillion.

The rear figure with a pillion is much higher than most riders expect. Under-inflation costs mileage; see why your bike’s mileage is dropping.

Warranty conditions

The 2021 edition of the manual gives the Splendor+ programmed FI a warranty of 5 years or 70,000 km, whichever is earlier (page 59). It advises owners to take all free and paid services at an authorised Hero MotoCorp workshop to stay eligible, and the limitations list says the warranty does not apply if the free services, paid services and oil top-ups are not done on schedule at an authorised workshop (page 60).

Normal wear items such as the drive chain and sprockets, brake shoes, clutch plates, spark plug and filters are not covered (page 60). Warranty terms can change between model years, so check the booklet that came with your bike. While your Splendor+ is under warranty, keep its services with Hero. More in does doorstep bike service void your warranty?

After the warranty: doorstep service

The Splendor+ has a 97.2 cc engine, so it falls into our general service up to 110 cc, listed at ₹999 on the package page, which shows the full checklist and what is excluded. It includes engine oil replacement and chain cleaning and lubrication. Every service carries a 7-day warranty on our workmanship, and no part is replaced without your approval. Between services, see how to clean, lube and check the chain. Other Hero guides: HF Deluxe, Glamour, Passion Pro, Xtreme 160R and Xpulse 200.
