The Hero Xpulse 200 is built for rough roads, and its maintenance schedule reflects that: the drive chain needs attention far more often than on a commuter bike, and the air filter is cleaned at every service. This guide sets out what Hero MotoCorp’s own owner’s manual for the BS VI Xpulse 200 says: when each service is due, what gets done, which oil to use, and what the warranty requires.
The short answer
- Five free services: the first at 500–750 km or 60 days, then four more roughly every 3,000 km or 100 days.
- Then a paid service every 3,000 km or 90 days, whichever comes first.
- Engine oil is changed at the 1st, 3rd and 5th free services and then every 6,000 km, and topped up at the services in between.
- Oil grade: SAE 10W-30, API SL, JASO MA2. About 1.17 litres at an oil change.
- Drive chain: inspected, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted every 700 km.
The service schedule
From the Xpulse 200 programmed FI owner’s manual, June 2020 edition (pages 45–47). The maintenance schedule on Hero’s service page gives the same intervals. Each service is due at the kilometre reading or the day limit, whichever comes first:
- 1st free service: 500–750 km, or 60 days from purchase.
- 2nd free service: 3,000–3,500 km, or 100 days after the 1st.
- 3rd free service: 6,000–6,500 km, or the next 100 days.
- 4th free service: 9,000–9,500 km, or the next 100 days.
- 5th free service: 12,000–12,500 km, or the next 100 days.
- Paid services after that: within 90 days or 3,000 km of the previous service, whichever is earlier.
Hero says to service the bike more often if it is ridden in unusually wet or dusty conditions (page 45), which is exactly where an Xpulse tends to be ridden.
What gets done at the services
The maintenance chart (pages 46–47) lists around 30 items. The ones worth knowing:
- Engine oil: changed at the 1st, 3rd and 5th free services, then every 6,000 km. At the services in between, the level is checked and topped up. The oil strainer screen and centrifugal filter are cleaned at each oil change.
- Oil cooler and hoses: inspected at every service.
- Air filter: cleaned at every service, and replaced at 12,000 km and every 12,000 km after that.
- Spark plug: inspected, cleaned and gapped at each service, and replaced at 12,000 km and every 12,000 km after that. The gap is 0.8–0.9 mm (page 7).
- Valve clearance: checked and adjusted at every service. The standard clearance, cold, is 0.07 mm intake and 0.09 mm exhaust, +0.01/−0.02 mm (page 7).
- Drive chain: inspected, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted every 700 km. Slack should be 30–35 mm of vertical movement (page 57).
- Brakes: pad wear and brake fluid are checked at every service, and the brake fluid (DOT 4 or DOT 3, page 7) is replaced every 2 years or 30,000 km (page 45).
- Clutch: lever free play checked and adjusted at every service. It should be 10–20 mm at the lever (page 55).
- Front fork oil: replaced every 2 years or 30,000 km, whichever is earlier (page 45).
- Rear suspension: the mounting bushes are checked for play, and the rear shock absorber replaced if necessary.
Engine oil
Hero specifies its own Hero 4T Plus oil in SAE 10W-30, SL grade, JASO MA2 (page 15). The engine takes 1,170 ml at a normal drain and refill and 1,360 ml when rebuilt (page 7). Top up if the level is at or near the lower mark.
Using an oil that is not compatible with the engine is one of the listed reasons the warranty will not apply. For how this compares with other bikes, see which engine oil does your bike need?
Tyre pressures
Checked cold (page 66):
- Front: 25 psi (1.75 kgf/cm²), rider only or with a pillion.
- Rear: 33 psi (2.30 kgf/cm²) rider only, and 36 psi (2.50 kgf/cm²) with a pillion.
Under-inflation costs mileage; see why your bike’s mileage is dropping.
Warranty conditions
The 2020 manual warrants the Xpulse 200 programmed FI for 5 years or 70,000 km, whichever is earlier. It advises owners to take all free and paid services at an authorised Hero MotoCorp workshop to stay eligible, with each paid service within 90 days of the previous one, and its list of limitations says the warranty does not apply if the free services, paid services and oil top-ups are not done on schedule at an authorised Hero MotoCorp workshop.
Warranty terms can change between model years, so check the booklet that came with your bike. While your Xpulse 200 is under warranty, keep its services with Hero. More in does doorstep bike service void your warranty?
After the warranty: doorstep service
The Xpulse 200 has a 199.6 cc engine (page 7), so it falls into our general service up to 200 cc, listed at ₹1,999 + 18% GST on the package page, which shows the full checklist and what is excluded. It includes engine oil replacement and chain cleaning and lubrication. Every service carries a 7-day warranty on our workmanship, and no part is replaced without your approval. With a 700 km chain interval, it is worth doing the chain yourself between services; see how to clean, lube and check the chain.
