The Hero Xtreme 160R needs more frequent chain care than Hero’s commuters, and its service schedule changed with the newer OBD-2B models. This guide sets out what Hero MotoCorp’s own owner’s manuals for the 2-valve Xtreme 160R say: when each service is due, what gets done, which oil to use, and what the warranty requires.
The short answer
- Newer Xtreme 160R (June 2025 manual, OBD-2B): four free services, then a paid service every 6,000 km or 180 days, whichever comes first. The engine oil is changed at every service.
- Earlier BS VI Xtreme 160R (April 2023 manual): five free services, then a paid service every 3,000 km or 90 days. The oil is changed every 6,000 km and topped up in between.
- Oil grade: SAE 10W-30, API SL, JASO MA2. About 1.1–1.2 litres at an oil change, depending on the edition.
- Drive chain: inspected, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted every 1,000 km on both schedules, twice as often as on Hero’s commuter bikes.
Which schedule applies depends on your bike. The owner’s manual in your bike’s document wallet is the one to follow; if it says “180 days or 6000 km”, you have the newer schedule.
The service schedule: newer Xtreme 160R (2025 manual)
From the Xtreme 160R owner’s manual, June 2025 edition, printed for the Xtreme 160R Stealth (pages 40–42). Each service is due at the kilometre reading or the day limit, whichever comes first:
- 1st free service: 500–750 km, or 60 days from purchase.
- 2nd free service: 6,000–6,500 km, or 180 days after the 1st.
- 3rd free service: 12,000–12,500 km, or the next 180 days.
- 4th free service: 18,000–18,500 km, or the next 180 days.
- Paid services after that: once every 6,000 km, and within 180 days of the previous service, whichever is earlier.
The service schedule: earlier Xtreme 160R (2023 manual)
From the Xtreme 160R owner’s manual, April 2023 edition (pages 37–39). The maintenance schedule on Hero’s service page gives the same intervals:
- 1st free service: 500–750 km, or 60 days from purchase.
- 2nd to 5th free services: at 3,000–3,500, 6,000–6,500, 9,000–9,500 and 12,000–12,500 km, each within 100 days of the previous one.
- Paid services after that: within 90 days or 3,000 km of the previous service, whichever is earlier.
What gets done at the services
The two charts cover the same items. The ones worth knowing:
- Engine oil: on the 2025 schedule, changed at every service. On the 2023 schedule, changed at the 1st, 3rd and 5th free services and every 6,000 km, and topped up in between. The oil strainer screen and centrifugal filter are cleaned at each oil change.
- Spark plug: inspected, cleaned and gapped, and replaced at 12,000 km and every 12,000 km after that. The gap is 0.8–0.9 mm (page 7).
- Air filter: replaced every 12,000 km on the 2025 schedule (page 40) and every 15,000 km on the 2023 schedule (page 37), sooner in dusty conditions.
- Valve clearance: checked and adjusted at every service. The standard clearance, cold, is 0.12 mm intake and 0.13 mm exhaust (page 7).
- Drive chain: inspected, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted every 1,000 km. Slack should be 20–25 mm (page 49 of the 2025 manual, page 48 of the 2023 manual).
- Battery: voltage tested at every service.
- Brakes: pad wear and brake fluid are checked at every service, and the brake fluid is replaced every 2 years or 30,000 km. On drum-brake versions the brake shoes are inspected and adjusted.
- Clutch: lever free play checked and adjusted at every service. It should be 10–20 mm at the lever.
- Front fork oil: replaced every 2 years or 30,000 km, whichever is earlier.
Engine oil
Hero specifies its own Hero 4T Plus oil in SAE 10W-30, SL grade, JASO MA2 (page 13 of both editions). The June 2025 manual gives 1.2 litres at a normal drain and refill and 1.4 litres when rebuilt; the April 2023 manual gives 1.09 litres and 1.3 litres (page 7 of each). Top up if the level is at or near the lower mark.
Using an oil that is not compatible with the engine is one of the listed reasons the warranty will not apply. For how this compares with other bikes, see which engine oil does your bike need?
Tyre pressures
Checked cold (page 61 of the 2025 manual, page 60 of the 2023 manual):
- Front: 25 psi (1.75 kgf/cm²), rider only or with a pillion.
- Rear: 28 psi (1.96 kgf/cm²) rider only, and 30 psi (2.10 kgf/cm²) with a pillion.
Under-inflation costs mileage and grip; see why your bike’s mileage is dropping.
Warranty conditions
Both manuals warrant the Xtreme 160R for 5 years or 70,000 km, whichever is earlier. They advise owners to take all free and paid services at an authorised Hero MotoCorp workshop to stay eligible, and the list of limitations says the warranty does not apply if the free services, paid services and oil top-ups are not done on schedule at a Hero MotoCorp workshop.
Warranty terms can change between model years, so check the booklet that came with your bike. While your Xtreme 160R is under warranty, keep its services with Hero. More in does doorstep bike service void your warranty?
After the warranty: doorstep service
The Xtreme 160R has a 163.23 cc engine (page 7), so it falls into our general service up to 200 cc, listed at ₹1,999 + 18% GST on the package page, which shows the full checklist and what is excluded. It includes engine oil replacement and chain cleaning and lubrication. Every service carries a 7-day warranty on our workmanship, and no part is replaced without your approval. With a 1,000 km chain interval, it is worth doing the chain yourself between services; see how to clean, lube and check the chain.
