The Hero Passion Pro is a 113 cc commuter with a short, regular maintenance schedule. This guide sets out what Hero MotoCorp’s own owner’s manual for the BS VI Passion Pro says: when each service is due, what gets done, which oil to use, and what the warranty requires.

The short answer

  • Five free services: the first at 500–750 km or 60 days, then four more roughly every 3,000 km or 100 days.
  • Then a paid service every 3,000 km or 90 days, whichever comes first.
  • Engine oil is changed at the 1st, 3rd and 5th free services and then every 6,000 km, and topped up at the 3,000 km services in between.
  • Oil grade: SAE 10W-30, API SL, JASO MA2. About 0.75 litre at an oil change.
  • Drive chain: inspected, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted every 2,000 km.

The service schedule

From the Passion Pro programmed FI owner’s manual, October 2021 edition (pages 31–33), which is the latest Passion Pro manual on Hero’s website. The maintenance schedule on Hero’s service page gives the same intervals. Each service is due at the kilometre reading or the day limit, whichever comes first:

  • 1st free service: 500–750 km, or 60 days from purchase.
  • 2nd free service: 3,000–3,500 km, or 100 days after the 1st.
  • 3rd free service: 6,000–6,500 km, or the next 100 days.
  • 4th free service: 9,000–9,500 km, or the next 100 days.
  • 5th free service: 12,000–12,500 km, or the next 100 days.
  • Paid services after that: within 90 days or 3,000 km of the previous service, whichever is earlier.

Hero also notes that a bike used hard or ridden in dusty areas needs servicing more often.

What gets done at the services

The maintenance chart (pages 32–33) lists around 30 items. The ones worth knowing:

  • Engine oil: changed at the 1st, 3rd and 5th free services, then every 6,000 km. At the services in between, the level is checked and topped up.
  • Oil filter: replaced at 12,000 km and every 12,000 km after that. The oil strainer screen is cleaned at the 1st and 5th free services and every 12,000 km.
  • Spark plug: inspected, cleaned and gapped at each service, and replaced at 12,000 km and every 12,000 km after that. The gap is 0.6–0.7 mm (page 5).
  • Air filter: replaced every 15,000 km, sooner in dusty conditions (page 31). Hero’s chart says not to open the air cleaner element before then unless there is a drivability problem.
  • Valve clearance: checked and adjusted at every service. The standard clearance, cold, is 0.08 mm intake and 0.12 mm exhaust (page 5).
  • Drive chain: inspected, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted every 2,000 km, which is more often than the service interval. Slack should be about 30 mm (page 43).
  • Brakes: brake shoes, and on disc-brake bikes the disc and pads, are inspected at every service. Brake fluid is checked and topped up, and replaced every 2 years or 30,000 km (page 31).
  • Clutch: lever free play checked and adjusted at every service. It should be 10–20 mm at the lever (page 41).
  • Front fork oil: replaced every 2 years or 30,000 km, whichever is earlier (page 31).
  • Emissions: CO at idle is checked at the 3rd and 5th free services and every 6,000 km.

Engine oil

Hero specifies its own Hero 4T Plus oil in SAE 10W-30, SL grade, JASO MA2 (page 11). The engine takes about 0.75 litre at a normal drain and refill, and 0.95 litre when rebuilt (page 5). With so little oil in the engine, a small drop in level matters, so check it regularly and top up when it nears the lower mark.

Using a different grade has warranty consequences: the warranty does not apply if an engine oil not compatible with the product is used. For how this compares with other bikes, see which engine oil does your bike need?

Tyre pressures

Checked cold (page 54):

  • Front: 25 psi (1.75 kgf/cm²), rider only or with a pillion.
  • Rear: 28 psi (2.00 kgf/cm²) rider only, and 41 psi (2.80 kgf/cm²) with a pillion.

The rear figure with a pillion is much higher than most riders expect. Under-inflation costs mileage; see why your bike’s mileage is dropping.

Warranty conditions

The 2021 manual warrants the Passion Pro programmed FI for 5 years or 70,000 km, whichever is earlier. It advises owners to take all free and paid services at an authorised Hero MotoCorp workshop to stay eligible, with each paid service within 90 days of the previous one, and its list of limitations says the warranty does not apply if the free services, paid services and oil top-ups are not done on schedule at an authorised Hero MotoCorp workshop.

Warranty terms can change between model years, so check the booklet that came with your bike. While your Passion Pro is under warranty, keep its services with Hero. More in does doorstep bike service void your warranty?

After the warranty: doorstep service

The Passion Pro has a 113.2 cc engine (page 5), so it falls into our general service up to 125 cc, listed at ₹1,225 + 18% GST on the package page, which shows the full checklist and what is excluded. It includes engine oil replacement and chain cleaning and lubrication. Every service carries a 7-day warranty on our workmanship, and no part is replaced without your approval. Between services, see how to clean, lube and check the chain.
