The Honda Shine 125 is serviced on a simple rhythm: one early service, then one every 6,000 km or 6 months. One job falls between services, though: the chain needs attention every 1,000 km. This guide sets out what Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s own documents for the current Shine 125 say: when each service is due, what gets done, which oil it takes, what the warranty requires, and what a service costs with us.
The short answer
- First service: at 1,000 km or 1 month.
- Then every 6,000 km or 6 months, whichever is earlier: 6,000, 12,000, 18,000 km and so on.
- Engine oil is replaced at every one of those services; the oil filter every 12,000 km.
- Drive chain: inspected and lubricated every 1,000 km, which you can do yourself between services.
This follows Honda’s February 2025 Shine 125 owner’s manual and maintenance schedule. The manual covers both versions sold in India: the disc-brake version (Honda’s code CBF125 V ID) and the drum-brake version (VI ID). The Shine 100 has its own manual.
The service schedule
Honda lists each service against an odometer reading and a number of months, and says to “service according to odometer reading or months, whichever is earlier” (owner’s manual, printed pages 45–46):
- 1st service: 1,000 km, or 1 month.
- 2nd service: 6,000 km, or 6 months.
- Then: 12,000, 18,000, 24,000, 30,000 and 36,000 km, at 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months.
- Beyond 36,000 km: repeat at the same intervals.
The manual also lists an annual check. It does not say how many services are free; any free-service coupons come with your dealer’s service booklet. The manual itself says that “all scheduled maintenance is considered a normal owner operating cost” and asks you to keep the receipts (page 44).
What gets done, and when
At every service
- Engine oil replaced.
- Engine idle speed, the brake system and the clutch system inspected.
- From the 6,000 km service on: fuel line, throttle operation, crankcase breather (cleaned), valve clearance, battery, brake pad or shoe wear, brake light switch, headlight aim, side stand, suspension and wheels/tyres are inspected each time.
On longer intervals
- Oil filter: replaced, and the oil strainer screen cleaned, every 12,000 km.
- Spark plug: inspected at 6,000, 18,000 and 30,000 km and replaced every 12,000 km. Honda specifies an NGK CPR8EA-9, gapped at 0.8–0.9 mm (page 124).
- Air filter: replaced every 18,000 km, and more often in unusually wet or dusty conditions.
- Steering head bearings: inspected every 12,000 km.
- Brake fluid (disc-brake version): inspected at every service from 6,000 km and replaced every 2 years. Honda specifies DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid.
- Honda diagnostic system: checked at 6,000, 18,000 and 30,000 km.
Honda marks the valve clearance, air cleaner, idle speed, battery and suspension, among others, as jobs that need proper tools and service data, and the diagnostic system, oil strainer screen, wheels and steering bearings as dealer-only for safety.
The drive chain, every 1,000 km
The chain is the one item on the Shine that cannot wait for the next service. Honda’s schedule says to inspect and lubricate it every 1,000 km, and more often if you ride off-road. The manual’s figures (pages 53 and 82):
- Slack: 20–30 mm, measured midway between the sprockets. Do not ride if it exceeds 50 mm.
- Cleaning: a dry cloth with a cleaner made for O-ring chains, or neutral detergent, and a soft brush if it is dirty.
- Lubricant: a chain lubricant made for O-ring chains; if you cannot get one, SAE 80 or 90 gear oil.
For the full routine, see how to clean, lube and check the chain.
Engine oil
The quantities: 0.85 litres for an oil change, 0.9 litres when the oil filter is changed too, and 1.0 litre after an engine rebuild (pages 68 and 124). As in Honda’s 2025 Activa manual, the grade appears in two places with different viscosities:
- The Specifications page recommends Honda 4-stroke motorcycle oil, SAE 5W-30, JASO T 903 MA, API SJ or higher (page 124).
- The Engine Oil page says that if you use another oil, it must meet JASO MA, SAE 10W-30 and API SJ or higher (page 51).
Either way it must be JASO MA, the motorcycle grade (scooters such as the Activa take MB), and not an oil marked “Energy Conserving” or “Resource Conserving”. If you are unsure which viscosity applies to your bike, follow the manual that came with it. More in which engine oil does your bike need?
Tyre pressures
Checked cold (page 124): front 25 psi (1.75 kgf/cm²) and rear 33 psi (2.25 kgf/cm²). Low pressure costs mileage; see why your bike’s mileage is dropping.
Warranty conditions
Honda warrants the Shine 125 for 36 months or 42,000 km, whichever comes first, with repairs done at its authorised workshops (page 126). Tyres and the battery are covered by their own makers. As in the Activa manual, the warranty does not apply to “any vehicle on which any free and paid services has not been carried out, as per schedule given in Owner’s Manual” (page 127), or to a vehicle “that has not been serviced by HMSI authorised dealer as per the service schedule” (page 128). Wear items such as the drive chain, sprockets, brake pads and shoes, air cleaner element and engine oil are not covered.
So while your Shine is under warranty, keep every scheduled service with a Honda dealer and keep the receipts. More in does doorstep bike service void your warranty?
After the warranty: doorstep service and cost
The Shine 125’s engine is 123.94 cc (page 123), so it falls into our general service up to 125 cc, listed at ₹1,225 + 18% GST on the package page, which shows the full checklist and what is excluded. It includes engine oil replacement and chain cleaning and lubrication. Parts that Honda’s schedule calls for at longer intervals, such as an oil filter, spark plug or air filter, are extra, and no part is replaced without your approval. Every service carries a 7-day warranty on our workmanship. You can also book from the Honda CB Shine page. If your Honda is a scooter, see the Honda Activa service schedule.
