Your electric scooter used to do the office run and back on one charge. Now it is begging for a plug by evening. Nothing broke, nothing sounds wrong — the range just quietly shrank.
That is the most common EV complaint we get at the doorstep, and it is almost never one dramatic fault. It is usually three or four ordinary things stacking up. Here is what is actually happening, in the order we check it.
First, rule out the boring stuff: tyre pressure
Under-inflated tyres are the single biggest range thief on an electric two-wheeler, and the most ignored. A scooter running 8–10 PSI below spec can lose 10–15% of its range before anything else is even wrong. Rolling resistance goes up, the motor draws more current to hold the same speed, and the battery drains faster for the same trip.
EVs are hit harder than petrol scooters here because they are heavier — the battery pack adds 25–40 kg over a comparable petrol scooter, and all of that weight presses down on the contact patch.
Check pressure cold, once a week, against the sticker on the frame or under the seat — not against what the tyre wall says. That number is a maximum, not a recommendation.
Second: the battery has aged, and that is normal
Lithium-ion packs lose capacity with use. That is chemistry, not a defect. A typical scooter pack is rated for something like 800–1,000 full charge cycles before it settles around 70–80% of its original capacity.
What that means in practice: if your scooter did a genuine 90 km when new and now does 70 km after two-and-a-half years of daily charging, that is roughly on schedule. Disappointing, but not a warranty claim.
What is not normal is a sharp drop — 90 km to 55 km over a couple of months, or a range that swings wildly week to week. That pattern usually points at a specific cell group degrading faster than the rest, or at the BMS mis-reporting. It is worth a diagnostic rather than a shrug.
What ages a pack faster
- Sitting at 100% for hours. Charging overnight so it hits full at 1 a.m. and then sits at full until 8 a.m. is harder on the cells than finishing the charge closer to when you ride.
- Deep discharges. Regularly running to 0–5% stresses the pack far more than topping up from 30%.
- Heat. Charging immediately after a long ride, while the pack is still hot, is one of the worst habits. Give it 20–30 minutes.
- Indian summers. A scooter parked in direct sun in May is cooking its battery. Shade genuinely extends pack life.
Third: your riding changed, even if you did not notice
Range figures come from gentle, steady-speed testing. Real riding is not that. On most scooters, the difference between a 40 km/h commute and a 60 km/h one is enormous — aerodynamic drag climbs with the square of speed, so the last 20 km/h costs far more than the first 20.
Other quiet range killers: a pillion on every trip, heavy loads on the footboard, short hops that never let the motor settle into its efficient band, and riding in a high-power mode all the time when Eco would do for city traffic.
Winter matters too. Lithium cells deliver less usable energy when cold. A north-Indian December morning can knock 10–20% off range that comes right back in March. If your range dropped in November and you are still worried in January, temperature is a strong candidate.
Fourth: drivetrain drag
On belt-driven scooters, a worn, glazed or wrongly-tensioned drive belt makes the motor work harder for every kilometre. A belt that is too tight is as bad as one that is loose — it adds constant parasitic load. On hub-motor scooters, dragging brakes are the equivalent problem: a caliper that is not releasing fully will eat range continuously and you will feel it as mild warmth at the wheel after a ride.
Both are easy to miss because neither makes an obvious noise until it is quite far gone.
Fifth: charger and charging behaviour
A failing charger will often still charge — just not fully, and not accurately. If your scooter now reports “full” noticeably sooner than it used to, suspect the charger before the battery. Using a non-original charger with the wrong voltage or current profile is a common cause of both short range and accelerated pack ageing.
Also worth checking: charging port pins for corrosion or heat discolouration, and the cable for damage where it flexes near the plug.
A quick self-diagnosis
- Range fell gradually over 2+ years → normal pack ageing, plus check tyre pressure.
- Range fell sharply in weeks → get a battery and BMS diagnostic.
- Range is bad only in cold months → temperature; it will recover.
- Range is fine but charging takes longer or ends early → charger first.
- Range dropped after a service or a new tyre → check pressure and brake drag.
- Scooter also feels sluggish or noisy → drivetrain: belt tension and wear.
